A date where you both have something to do

Dinner is fine. Dinner is also two hours of maintained eye contact and a bill.

Ice-free curling gives you something to actually do. You slide stones down a purpose-built sheet, try to knock theirs out of the way, and find out fairly quickly how competitive they are. Almost nobody has played before, so neither of you starts with an advantage.

Between shots there’s a bar, street food and a DJ. The conversation happens around the game instead of across a table.

Couples activities at Vinegar Yard and Chelsea

The two venues give you quite different evenings.

Chelsea sits inside the winter village at Chelsea Winter Illuminations. Lights everywhere, après-ski styling and a busier, louder feel. Pick it when you want the setting to do some of the talking.

Vinegar Yard is near London Bridge, close to Borough Market and Bermondsey Street. It’s the one to choose if you’re building a longer evening around the area.

Both venues run the same packages, so the only real decision is which side of the river you want to be on.

How Pay and Play works

Just the two of you. Thirty minutes on the curling sheet for two to four players, with no six-person minimum. Play, then stay on for street food and a drink.

First dates, double dates and anniversaries

A 30-minute session is about right for a first date. Long enough to get past the small talk, short enough to leave gracefully if it isn’t going anywhere. Book an early slot and dinner afterwards stays an option rather than a commitment.

For a double date, book for four and split into pairs. The competition does most of the work for you, and it quietly solves the problem of one person doing all the talking.

If you already know each other well, book the session and stay on afterwards for food and drinks. This is the one for anniversaries and birthdays, particularly if you’ve worked your way through every restaurant worth going back to.

Almost nobody arrives having curled before. Whatever the occasion, you’ll both be learning it at the same time.

Never curled before?

Neither has almost anyone else on the sheet. Five minutes of rules and you’re playing, but if you’d rather turn up knowing what you’re doing, we’ve written it all down.

Make it a festive date night

From November, both venues run through the Christmas season: mulled wine, winter cocktails and the Illuminations at Chelsea. December slots go quickly, particularly Thursdays and Fridays.
