Date Night Ideas in London
The best London date nights offer an engaging activity that still leaves room to talk. The right choice balances active participation, conversation flow, and appeal for non-drinkers, a vital consideration now that nearly a quarter of adults in England do not drink. As operators of two London ice-free curling venues, we have an obvious bias, but here is how curling honestly compares to five other popular date ideas.
Why does date night in London so often disappoint?
Because a surprising number of supposedly different date ideas are still a bar with a theme attached.
The Health Survey for England 2024, published by NHS England in January 2026, found that 24% of adults had not drunk alcohol in the previous twelve months. That represents an estimated 11.2 million people.
The difference is particularly noticeable among younger adults. Among men aged 16 to 24, 39% had not drunk alcohol in the previous twelve months, while the figure for women in the same age group was 31%. The proportion across all adults had previously fluctuated between 17% and 20% from 2011 onwards before rising to 24% in 2024. The published Health Survey for England data tables contain the full breakdown.
There is an important distinction here. These figures describe people who had not drunk alcohol during the previous year. They do not mean that everyone in the group is a lifelong non-drinker, and the survey covers England rather than the whole UK.
For date nights, however, the implication is straightforward. A good evening should still work when one of you orders a soft drink. The activity should be the point, not an excuse to get to the next round.
What should you ask before booking a date night?
Five questions will tell you more about a date idea than whether a venue describes itself as quirky, immersive or Instagrammable.
What does the price actually include? A low headline ticket price can become a very different total once food, drinks, equipment hire and booking fees are added. Look at what the evening costs as a whole rather than the first number you see.
Do you both participate? Some activities are naturally one-at-a-time. That can be entertaining in a group, but on a date it may leave one person watching while the other performs.
Does it work without alcohol? There is a major difference between a venue that happens to have a bar and an experience where alcoholic drinks are effectively the product you have paid for.
Can you talk? A date does not need to be silent and candlelit, but two hours facing a stage is not particularly useful if the point is getting to know each other.
What happens if your plans change? Popular London dates can require advance booking, so check cancellation and amendment terms before committing.
What is ice-free curling, and how does it work?
Ice-free curling keeps the basic strategy of curling but moves the game onto a smooth synthetic playing surface. There is no ice, no specialist footwear and no need to learn how to stay upright on a slippery rink.
Players take turns sending stones down a sheet towards a target. A round is called an end. Once the stones have been played, the team or player with the stone closest to the centre scores.
The final stone of an end is known as the hammer, and having it creates an important tactical advantage. There is more on why the hammer matters in curling if you want the strategic explanation.
For most beginners, that is enough to start playing. You can also see what an ice-free curling session looks like before booking, or read the complete beginner’s guide to playing curling if you prefer to know the terminology first.
Why does ice-free curling work for a date?
The main advantage is that both people are involved.
For couples, The Curling Club’s Pay and Play format is the relevant option. Sessions for two to four players run for 30 minutes on a dedicated curling sheet, so you are taking turns against each other rather than spending half the activity watching from the side.
It also works whether or not you are drinking. The game provides the reason to be there, while the bar is optional. The curling is low-impact, played without ice and designed to be accessible to beginners. The après-ski bar provides drinks and the wider atmosphere if you want them, but nobody needs a drink in their hand to participate.
The format also gives you something to talk about without stopping you from having a conversation. You are side by side, taking shots, keeping score and arguing about whose stone is actually closer. That can take some of the pressure off a first date because neither person has to generate uninterrupted conversation from the moment they sit down.
The larger packages are designed for group occasions rather than couples. The House includes a reserved area for three hours, a drink, a small plate and an hour of curling for groups of six or more. Curls of Wisdom is the more substantial group package, so it is better suited to a double date with friends only if the wider party reaches the required group size.
Food and drink can be added around the activity, with the venue’s food and drink options helping you decide whether to eat there or continue somewhere else afterwards.
Where can you go ice-free curling in London?
The Curling Club returns to London for the 2026/27 winter season at two venues.
The first is Vinegar Yard near London Bridge, a short walk from London Bridge station and close to Borough Market, Bermondsey Street and the South Bank.
The second is The Curling Club at Chelsea Winter Village, at Royal Hospital Chelsea alongside the Chelsea Winter Illuminations.
Both combine curling with street food, drinks, music and an après-ski atmosphere, so you do not necessarily have to find another venue as soon as the game ends.
For larger groups, Curls of Wisdom includes a reserved area, drinks, a main meal and an hour of curling. For a straightforward date for two, Pay and Play is the simpler option.
The Curling Club is also an Official Partner of the Team GB Foundation and works with Olympic curlers including Eve Muirhead and Jen Rouse.
Which London date ideas feel genuinely different?
Curling is not the only answer. These alternatives can all produce a good date, but they solve different problems.
A cooking class
A cookery class gives you a built-in activity and a clear structure to the evening. You are making something together rather than relying entirely on conversation, and the food usually becomes part of the experience rather than an additional destination afterwards.
The drawback is that much of the evening may be spent facing an instructor or concentrating on the task. If one person loves cooking and the other is terrified of chopping an onion in public, the relaxed date can turn into an unwanted practical exam.
Check whether you cook as a pair, what food is included and whether the session is primarily demonstration or hands-on before booking.
A cocktail-making class
Cocktail classes have many of the same advantages as cookery sessions. You have a task, there is usually plenty of interaction and you are less likely to encounter long silences.
The obvious problem is that the experience is built around alcohol. If one person does not drink, check whether the venue offers a proper alcohol-free equivalent rather than simply removing part of what the ticket includes.
For two people who both enjoy cocktails, it can work extremely well. For a mixed drinking and non-drinking couple, there are usually more balanced options.
A roller disco or skating session
Skating gives you movement, music and something to laugh about, which makes it much more memorable than another drink at a table.
It works best when both people are at roughly the same level. If one of you can skate confidently and the other spends the evening attached to the barrier, you are technically sharing an activity but having very different experiences.
Remember to include equipment hire when comparing prices, and think about what happens afterwards. A rink session is often the first half of a date rather than the entire evening.
An immersive experience
London has no shortage of immersive theatre, themed bars and interactive experiences. At their best, they give you a shared story to react to rather than forcing the entire night to revolve around conversation.
The weakness is that “immersive” covers everything from genuinely interactive theatre to an expensive themed drinking session. Read what the ticket actually includes before booking.
If several alcoholic drinks are included in the price, find out whether a worthwhile non-alcoholic version exists. If the event is heavily scripted or performance-led, also consider how much opportunity you will actually have to speak to each other.
What are the reliable date-night choices?
Not every date has to involve throwing a stone down a synthetic curling sheet or being handed an apron.
Two traditional choices still work very well when they suit the stage of the relationship.
Dinner
Dinner remains a good date because it gives you time together with very few distractions. On an established date, that can be exactly what you want.
For a first meeting, it can feel more intense. Once you have ordered, you are committed to sitting opposite each other for a substantial part of the evening with conversation doing all of the work.
If that sounds appealing, book dinner. If it sounds like an interview with starters, choose an activity first and leave food until afterwards.
When comparing restaurants, look at the full menu rather than a headline set-menu price. Drinks, service charges and additional courses can substantially change the final bill.
A museum or gallery late
London’s museums and galleries can be excellent evening dates, particularly when a venue runs late-night exhibitions, talks or events.
They are useful because you automatically have things around you to discuss, and neither person has to perform. They can also work well for non-drinkers because alcohol is incidental rather than central to the experience.
The downside is that a museum visit does not always have a natural second half. Once you have finished the exhibition, you may still need somewhere to sit, eat or continue the evening.
Check the individual event rather than assuming every late opening follows the same format. Some are free-entry evenings, while special exhibitions and organised events may be ticketed.
How much does a date night in London cost?
There is no useful single figure for a London date night because the formats are too different.
A museum followed by coffee is a completely different purchase from dinner and cocktails, while an activity ticket may or may not include food, drinks or equipment.
The better way to compare dates is to calculate the complete evening for two:
- activity or admission
- equipment hire if required
- food
- drinks
- booking or service charges
- travel between venues
Ice-free curling has one advantage here because the activity and the surrounding food-and-drink venue are in the same place. The Curling Club currently advertises Pay and Play from £19.50, with 30-minute sessions available for groups of two to four.
For any ticketed activity, check whether the headline price is per person, per lane, per table or per session before comparing it with another option.
When should you book a London date night?
Book early if you want a specific Friday or Saturday, particularly during the Christmas period. For flexible weeknight plans, you will generally have more choice.
The Curling Club’s 2026 London season begins in November, with bookings already open. That seasonality is also its clearest drawback as a date idea. If you are looking for an activity in spring or summer, you will need to choose something else.
Cancellation and amendment rules also vary between venues. For Curling Club bookings, the details are set out in the booking terms, while current dates and packages can be checked on the booking page.
How should you choose between these date ideas?
Start with the five questions.
What are you really paying for? Do you both participate? Does it work without alcohol? Can you talk? What happens if your plans change?
Curling answers the participation, non-drinking and conversation questions particularly well. Its weakness is seasonality. A cookery class gives you more time together but requires more concentration. Skating is energetic but depends heavily on ability. Immersive experiences can be memorable but vary enormously in quality and format. Dinner gives you maximum conversation, while a museum gives you plenty to talk about without demanding constant interaction.
There is no universally best date idea in London. There is only the format that suits the two people going.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good first date idea in London?
A good first date combines an activity with enough space to talk. Games, museum visits, casual classes and ice-free curling all provide something to focus on without requiring hours of uninterrupted conversation. Ideally, choose something that can naturally continue into food or drinks if the date is going well.
How much should a date night in London cost?
It depends more on the format than the city. Compare the total price for two, including tickets, food, drinks, equipment and service charges, rather than choosing an activity based on its advertised starting price.
What can you do on a date in London if one person does not drink?
Choose an activity where alcohol is optional. Museums, galleries, cookery classes, bowling, skating, walking routes and ice-free curling can all work because participating does not depend on drinking. Be more cautious with experiences where several alcoholic drinks are included in the ticket price.
What are good indoor date ideas in London?
Ice-free curling, museum lates, cookery classes, bowling, cinema, indoor mini golf and many immersive experiences are all indoor options. Think about how much time you will actually spend interacting with each other rather than simply whether the venue is indoors.
Do you need any experience to play ice-free curling?
No. Ice-free curling is designed to be straightforward for beginners, and staff explain the basics before you start. There is no ice, specialist footwear or sweeping technique to master.
Is curling good for a double date?
Yes. Curling naturally creates friendly competition and gives everyone something to do, so a double date does not have to rely entirely on four-way conversation. Check the current booking options for your group size before choosing a session.
