How to Choose the Right Christmas Party for Your London Team

Why does capacity not tell you what you need to know?

Capacity tells you how many people fit in the venue, not how many can participate.

A venue might hold 120 people but only have four activity lanes. That means most of your team is waiting rather than playing.

That matters more now because fewer people drink. The Health Survey for England found that 24% of adults had not consumed alcohol in the previous twelve months, rising to 39% of men aged 16 to 24 and 31% of women in the same age group. NHS England published the findings in January 2026 from a sample of 4,344 men and 4,602 women.

The overall figure was 19% in 2022 and had remained between 17% and 20% from 2011 to 2022.

So if most of your team is waiting and the alternative activity is simply standing at the bar, a significant part of the room has very little to do.

The better question is not just where the party is, but how much of it your team is actually involved in.

What should you ask before you book anything?

Five questions matter.

First, how many people can participate at once? Ask how many lanes, sheets, tables or seats there are and how many people each accommodates, rather than relying on total venue capacity.

Next, what does everyone else do while they wait? If the only answer is standing at the bar, the evening will naturally work better for some people than others.

Then ask what the per-head price includes. Many London venues quote for the activity alone, with food and drinks added separately. A £40 headline price can quickly become £85 once everyone has eaten.

Does the format encourage people who do not normally work together to talk? That is often the main reason for organising the party. An activity where everyone faces a stage in silence is less likely to achieve it.

Finally, what happens if the headcount changes? December numbers move. People leave companies, plans change and trains get cancelled. Check the deposit and amendment policy before paying.

What is ice-free curling, and how does a game work?

It is curling without the ice.

The stones travel along a smooth synthetic surface laid over a solid floor, indoors and at room temperature. There are no cold hands, borrowed shoes or slippery surfaces to worry about.

Two teams take turns sliding stones towards a target at the far end of the sheet. One round of throws is called an end. The team with the stone closest to the centre scores, gaining a point for each additional stone closer than their opponent’s best.

The final stone is called the hammer, and teams spend the whole end working to keep it.

Why does it work for a London team?

For participation, people can be on the sheets at once at Vinegar Yard and at Chelsea. Teams rotate rather than queue for one long turn.

Those off the sheet can eat, watch, cheer and argue over the next shot. Because ends are short, it is easy to stay involved even when you are not throwing. That works just as well with a soft drink as it does with alcohol.

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free requirements can be accommodated with advance notice, with more on how group bookings come together.

On price, The House includes three hours in a reserved area, a drink, a small plate and an hour of curling.

Curls of Wisdom runs for four hours and includes three drinks, a main meal and an hour of curling. Food and drinks are included within the package.

Curling also helps mix the room. Players rotate, so you naturally talk to whoever throws before or after you rather than only the people you arrived with. Someone from finance lands a great shot against design and suddenly the room has something to react to.

December cancellation and amendment policies are rarely generous, so check the details before paying.

Who do we work with?

Those credentials do not make the party by themselves, but they do mean the people running the activity know what they are doing.

Where can you play in London?

There are two central London sites.

Vinegar Yard sits beside London Bridge station, making it a practical option for teams travelling from the City or south London.

Chelsea runs alongside the Winter Illuminations and is well placed for west London teams.

Groups start from six and can scale above and beyond for a full buyout, with larger bookings built around your numbers.

The obvious limitation is geography. Both venues are in London, so they make less sense if a large part of your team is travelling from elsewhere in the UK.

Which London options feel genuinely different?

A light trail at Christmas at Kew puts everyone on the same route with effectively no group cap, costing roughly £24 to £34 per adult at peak, with food and drinks bought separately.

The drawback is that ninety minutes outdoors with limited seating can stretch the group along the route. People often finish at different times and drift back towards the station rather than ending together.

A volunteering shift with Crisis at Christmas gives the team something meaningful to do, usually in groups of ten to twenty-five, either free or for a donation.

Everyone is involved throughout, but it is still a shift rather than a traditional party. That will appeal strongly to some teams and less to others.

What are the safe choices?

These two are reliable options and deserve to be treated that way.

A restaurant with a set festive menu costs roughly £45 to £85 per person in central London, with drinks usually extra.

Everyone eats together, but once the table gets much beyond fourteen people it stops being one conversation. Whoever you sit beside can become most of your evening.

A West End show on a group booking starts at roughly £35 to £75 per person, with group rates usually available from ten people upwards.

The downside is rigidity. The curtain does not wait, so anyone delayed at work or on public transport can miss part of the event. The group also spends most of the evening watching rather than talking.

When should you book, and what should you pay?

If your group is over thirty, start early. For smaller groups, aim to have something secured by early October.

December Fridays and Saturdays in central London go first. Groups above fifty should ideally shortlist in August and request quotes in September.

Deposits are usually non-refundable once a date is held. One London free venue-finding service also will not accept a brief below £10,000 plus VAT, a minimum only shown within its enquiry process, so check those thresholds before spending time on a detailed brief.

Across the options above, prices range from a donation for volunteering to around £24 to £34 for a light trail and £35 to £85 for a show or seated meal.

Always check what a quoted “from” price actually covers.

Our own limitation is seasonality. Both venues operate roughly from November to February and close outside that period. If your only suitable week is late October or mid-March, the venues will not work.
