Eve Muirhead OBE: A Career Defined by Gold

Eve Muirhead is widely recognised as one of Great Britain’s most successful and influential winter athletes. A four-time Olympian and a World and European champion, the Perth-born skip redefined the sport of curling in the UK, culminating in a historic gold medal victory at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

Making History in Sochi

Born into a curling dynasty—her father, Gordon, competed at the 1992 Winter Olympics—Muirhead’s rise to the top was meteoric. Having made her Olympic debut at Vancouver 2010 at just 19 years old, she returned to the Olympic stage in Sochi four years later with a point to prove.

In 2014, she skipped her rink to a bronze medal, becoming the youngest skip, male or female, to ever win an Olympic curling medal. It was a breakthrough moment that signaled the arrival of a new powerhouse in the sport.

Resilience in PyeongChang

However, the path to Olympic glory is rarely smooth. At the PyeongChang 2018 Games, Muirhead led her team to the semi-finals but suffered heartbreak, finishing in fourth place after a narrow defeat to Japan in the bronze medal match.

It was a testing period that required immense mental fortitude. Muirhead’s ability to regroup and rebuild her squad in the following years demonstrated the kind of leadership and resilience that defines a true champion.

Gold in Beijing 2022

The climax of Muirhead’s illustrious career arrived in Beijing. Leading a new-look team through a grueling qualification process, she peaked at the perfect moment. In the final, Team GB faced Japan, offering Muirhead a chance at redemption for the loss in 2018.

Under her stewardship, Team GB secured a emphatic 10-3 victory, claiming Great Britain’s only gold medal of the Games. It was a fitting finale for a decorated athlete who has since retired to become Team GB’s Chef de Mission for the 2026 Games.
